Review page 122 of your textbook (“Use of Time by Patrol Officers”). Does this section reflect what you saw in the video? If so, how? If not, why not? Is Philadelphia somehow unusual? What challenges to patrol officers face? How effective do the seem? Please use specific examples from the video to support your points.

After watching the video and reading the textbook excerpt, I dont believe that the section reflects what we see in the video. The reading suggests that most police officers are unassigned while theyre on duty making it seem as though there interactions with citizens are random based on what they see in the areas theyre patrolling. However in the video most of the police officers seem very familiar with the area as well as the people living there suggesting that although they arent officially assigned to a specific crime in that area they are there often looking for crimes. Philly isnt unusual and is very much like other large impoverished cities that deal with high crime rates and are heavily patrolled by police. I think one of the biggest challenges the officers face is that they are well aware of whats happening in the community, as we see in the video with how aware all of the officers are of the offenders, drugs dealers, drug users, gang affiliated, etc., but they cannot stop the crimes for good and the arrests and frisks will never end because there isnt a good or trustworthy relationship between officers and police. In order for the crime rate to actually go down people in the area would have to be willing to work with the police in order to take down the dangerous criminals in the area and start with creating a safer environment. The current police presence is obviously not that productive seeing that there is still such high crime rates and hostility between the police and citizens. Its clear that no one wants the police around and doesnt believe that they have the communitys best interest at heart and there seems to be a genuine hatred for the police. For a more effective relationship I think the police could start by getting involved in the community in non-police ways like attending events, supporting fundraisers, holding events for kids, etc.

Page 122 of the textbook did not reflect what I saw in the video. I say this because while reading the textbook, it described what happens during a patrol officers work schedule. The officers throughout the video were in a situation regarding gun possession. Some of the patrol officers were unassigned while they were working, according to the textbook. They primarily focus on the encounter between the citizens and themselves. Those encounters can occur often such as at a traffic stop

Philadelphia is not unusual, I think that police officers should be involved at all times. I say this because if Philadelphia is big on crime then it could cause problems between law enforcement and the people. Patrol officers face a lot of challenges because they have to handle dangerous situations and never know what might happen. They also are sometimes told what cases to focus on and what not to. I think that having to get back up during an investigation doesnt seem to be too effective because of the video. In the video, the police officer stated that he wanted the gun to be removed from the scene in order to protect the citizens. It seems as though it could be easier if the police and citizens could have a less fearful relationship and have normal conversations. With that being said, I think that once the relationship has been built between the two then back up becomes less effective.
