I will be looking for insight, logic and reasoning, along with the usual standards of good writing, in the following assignment.
Be sure to not only explain your conclusions, but support them using specific references to the movie.
Above all, remember to reflect on the events, characters, motives, and dynamics of the movie from all sides.
Possible topics
- Did Mookie do the right thing? Discuss his actions during the movie, but particularly his throwing the trash can through Sals window.
- Analyze Lees use of color, language, symbols and metaphors to make his movie. How does each nuance enhance the greater story? How do such contrasts as heat and ice, anger and love get symbolized and resolved? How does Lee use the Cadillacs to make a point?
- What do Malcom X and Martin Luther King, Jr., contribute to the film? Is there a conflict? Is it resolved?
- Is Sal a good guy or a bad guy? Is Mookie? How does each character, including Sals sons and Mookies sister, influence the movie?
- What is said about race? Immigrants? Emigrants? Gentrification?
- Discuss the ending. Is anything resolved? Why does Lee finish the film with a dawning and a bright new day rather than with the darkness of the previous scene?
- In the context of the film, is a common narrative possible? Can “facts” be wrong? Is the reflection, redefining, reevaluating, reasserting of narrative inevitable? Is narrative competitive?
- Choose a single character in the film and analyze his or her participation, contribution, faults and strength, and (generally) why he or she is in the film. What does he/she contribute?
