Curator Discussion

This activity provides the opportunity to synthesize some of what youve learned so far this semester.  It also provides you an opportunity to think creatively as you make unique connections and from the specific position of an arts professional the curator.

A curator is one who cares for a collection.  One of the responsibilities of a curator, particularly within museum contexts, is to interpret objects in the collection for museum visitors, and one way of interpreting artworks is by grouping them or displaying objects of a certain theme together.

A World of Emotions: Ancient Greece, 700 BC 200 AD, exhibition at the Onassis Cultural Center (2017)

For this discussion, pretend you are a curator of art of ancient Mediterranean cultures, and youre going to prepare a virtual mini-exhibition based on a theme of your own determination.  Your discussion posting should include a document or a link to a document that visually presents your mini-exhibition.  Your mini-exhibition should include the following features:

Strong thematic focus:  You should have a theme that connects the 3 artworks of your mini-exhibition.  Be sure your theme is not too generic.  For example, nature is way too broad.  However, you could focus it a little more to Animals of Power in the Ancient World or Man VS Beast: Exploring Human Relationships with Animals around the Ancient Mediterranean.

o   If youre struggling to find a theme, start looking through your book or class resources.  Dont expect to come up with something while staring at a blank screen.

o   Your theme should be unique in your group!  If your theme is similar to a group members, then your artworks should be different.

o   Many students like to focus on women as their theme for this project.  However, Women of the Ancient Mediterreanean too broad. If this is a topic that interests you, youll need to focus on a specific aspect of womanhood presented in the artworks.

Three artworks from three different cultures: Your three artworks should embody the theme that youve identified, but they should also offer a variety of experiences within that theme.

o   At least one of the artworks must come from the Aegean cultures that were covering in this unit (Cycladic Island, Minoan, or Mycenaean).

o   Your other two artworks can come from any of the other cultures that weve talked about so far this semester (e.g., Prehistoric, Near Eastern, or Egyptian) or the early Asian chapter.

o   Your artworks should come from our textbook or Blackboard resources no extra outside research is required for this discussion post.

An introduction-curatorial statement:  This statement should be a robust paragraph (approximately 100-150 words) that defines the theme of your exhibition and describes what ties your artworks together.  Essentially, what will the viewer see/notice/learn/understand when viewing your three artworks as a group?  Where do we see connections and where do we see distinctions between the objects as related to your theme?

Here is sample of a mini-exhibition  Illuminating Maman.  This is an example for my Survey of Modern Art class, but you can get an idea of the layout and type of introductory writing to formulate.  Although my artworks originate from the same culture (Early Modern French), your artworks should come from 3 different cultures covered in our ancient class.  Your discussion post should include the following:

A title that makes clear the theme of your exhibition and makes it an exhibition that Id want to visit.  Be creative!

A Curated by -byline for your exhibition (i.e., your name youre the curator)

Three visual images with labels.  Labels should include title, artist, date, medium and culture of origin

o   If the artist is unknown, then the label should read Unknown Artist

A robust paragraph introducing your exhibition (as discussed above your introduction-curatorial statement)

You have the option to be creative in the visual presentation format of your online exhibition.  You can submit your assignment as the following:
