TheCurriculum Essentials Project template has four sectioned parts (MissionStatement, Character Education, Standards Comparison, and Standards Integration).

 

PART I: MISSION STATEMENT

Amission statement clarifies priorities and gives direction to everyone in theorganization. Curriculum learning experiences must support the missionstatement. 

 

Inviewing curriculum written for this school, a curriculum evaluator will lookfor learning experiences that are integrative in nature and meet the needs ofthe whole child (intellectual, creative, social, and physical).

 

Forthe Part I Mission Statement section of the assignment template you shouldcreate a school mission statement that clarifies priorities and gives directionto the school organization. Situate your creativity and original missionstatement from a local schools mission statement. Reference that schoolsmission statement in the mission statement reference section.

 

PART II: CHARACTER EDUCATION

Charactereducation highlights character principles throughout the curriculum. Learning experiencesshould be engaging, active, and morally purposeful. For example:

 

CharacterPrinciple 1:  Integrity: Theteacher will use the literature story, TheEmpty Pot by Demi, to demonstrate the importance of integrity.  Students will read the story and then createa sequence flip-book of the main events of the story.  On the last page of the flip book, thestudents will write a summary sentence on the moral of the story; they willthen write a few sentences on how they can show integrity in their own lifeexperiences and actions.

CharacterPrinciple 2:  Work Ethic: Theteacher will introduce a unit the rise of industrialism in the UnitedStates.  Students will study concepts inefficiency, division of labor, free enterprise, etc.  For a home/school connection activity,students will complete a service learning project of their choice thatdemonstrates work ethic.  Results of thisproject will be made into a Social Studies Fair.

 

Forthe Part II Character Education section of the assignment template you should createan abbreviated plan for implementing character education by listing 8 characterprinciples that should be taught throughout the curriculum. Then create acorresponding learning experience that could be used to teach and practice eachof the 8 character principles.

 

PART III: STANDARDS COMPARISON

Nationaland state standards are the basis for planning, implementing, and assessingdifferentiated instruction. To complete the Part III Standards Comparisonsection of the assignment template you should:

 

First,consult the national standards at Education World Curriculum: National andState Standards (located under Curriculum Project: Curriculum EssentialsProject Resources); study those areas which pertain to the degree you areseeking (MAT for Elementary and SPED candidates review all four core areas (eg. Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Science) sinceyou will be endorsed and/or required to teach all core subject areas; MATcandidates in Secondary read through their specific contentstandards).

 

Second, readyour state standards at your state department of education website (EdStandards, located under Curriculum Project: Curriculum EssentialsProject Resources may be a help to you if you are not familiar with yourstate standards; MAT for Elementary and SPED candidates review all fourcore areas since you will be endorsed and/or required to teach all core subjectareas; MAT candidates in Secondary read through their specific contentstandards).

 

Third,compare your states standards to the VDOE Standards of Learning (SOL) andTesting, located under Curriculum Project: Curriculum Essentials ProjectResources. (If you live in VA use the VirginiaSOLs and compare them to another state of your choice.)

 

Fourth,write a standards comparison for one content area in the Part III StandardsComparison section of the assignment template. Compare and contrast within acontent area from general comparison to specific comparisons. Provide thoroughdetail and note the specific state standards you are comparing. Summarize whatyou have learned through this comparison. This section should be one to twopages, single-spaced.

 

PART IV: STANDARDS INTEGRATION

Developingcurriculum involves integrating standards across content areas. Aninterdisciplinary approach allows students to make connections among concepts,procedures, and applications to understand complex issues.

 

Forthe Part IV Standards Integration section of the assignment template you shouldprovide five interdisciplinary learning activities that are hands-on andcreative. Paste in the state standard you are addressing. Note the content areaand the interdisciplinary nature of the activity.
