In this task you will select and observe two videos of real-world teaching in which teachers are making efforts to adjust and differentiate instruction and meet student learning needs based upon formative assessment data and learning contexts. You will analyze the teachers’ decisions and evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts to differentiate instruction to meet learners’ needs.

In this task and others in this program, you will use the Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle (Gibbs, 1988) as a framework to respond to observations and experiences. Gibbs’ Reflective Cycle encourages you to think systematically about the phases of an experience or activity, first describing the experience, then addressing how it made you feel, next evaluating and analyzing it, then drawing a conclusion, and finally considering how this experience will apply to your future practice.

A.  Identify one video from the formative assessment videos provided in the “Task 1 Video List” in the Supporting Documents section below and watch it in its entirety. Reflect on your observations of the video by doing the following:

Description

1.  Describe modifications the teacher made to curriculum, instruction, or assessments based on formative assessment data during the video segment, and include evidence from the video for support.

2.  Describe how you think specific students felt before and after the adjustments from part A1 were implemented, and include evidence from the video for support.

3.  Discuss the effectiveness of specific adjustments from part A1, and include evidence from the video for support.

4.  Explain why you believe the teacher made the changes or adjustments described in part A1, including how formative assessment data may have influenced those decisions.

Conclusion

5.  Discuss how teachers must actively analyze formative assessment data as they teach in order to make modifications to curriculum, instruction, or assessments to improve student learning.

6.  Discuss two strategies you learned from the video that you can incorporate into your teaching to help you better meet the needs of all learners.

4.  Explain why you believe the teacher differentiated instruction in the manner described in part B1, including how individual learning needs or learning contexts may have influenced those decisions.

5.  Discuss how teachers must actively analyze information about students and the learning environment as they teach and how they should make adjustments to improve student learning.

6.  Discuss two strategies you learned from the video that you can incorporate into your teaching to help you better meet the needs of all learners.
 

C.  Explain how teachers use formative assessment and differentiation together to facilitate mastery for all students, and include evidence from the videos you watched in parts A and B to support your explanation.
