The book I choose was the “Hate you give” by Angie Thomas. The assignment - Your reading journal should be at least 4 full pages, typed and double-spaced (MLA
formatting). You should write no more than 6 journal entries. Discuss the issues that appear in your novel. This should include how various issues affect the characters, what you think about how these issues affect society, what questions you have about these issues, etc. The feelings and questions you have about these issues will help you focus your research. You may focus on
several issues early on in the journal, but narrow your focus to one issue in the last entry.

-each entry is numbered and has the page number you are at in your reading

-you show how these issues affect your characters
-you discuss the author’s purpose as it relates to these issues

-you have good questions and comments about the issue
-you discuss why this issue is important and how you feel about it in ways that go beyond the surface (e.g. do not say “I think all people should be treated equally.” Rather, say something like, “I never gave much thought to the impact racism has on economics in our country.” Then, explain!)

-Your last entry focuses on one issue. You can discuss several different facets of that issue.
