Think about how people change. Is there some one self that survives these changes? People change both physically and mentally. What matters more, that something mental persists (like thoughts or attitudes or memories) or that something physical persists (your heart or brain or skeleton)? Compare your intuitions with your intuitions about the ship. Is there some one substantial thing (mental or physical) that you identify a person with. Or does the continuity of change matter more?
Consider Elvis Presley. Elvis started a Baby Elvis and later became Rockin’ Elvis. We usually count one. But clearly there were lots of changes. What’s the thing that survived? We can imagine Elvis undergoing a heart transplant and still being the same one person who survives the change. What about a brain transplant? What if we could replace his brain with a duplicate that maintained all the same thoughts, memories, and psychological attitudes (including his musical talents)? What if his brain remained intact but he lost all his memories, talents and attitudes? Where do your intuitions go on these possibilities?
Some will want to identify Elvis and some one thing, like a physical brain, or something mental, like a mind or soul. That one substantial thing survives all the changes from Baby Elvis through Rockin’ Elvis. Others might have the intuition that there is no one thing but rather a continuous package of changes, all tied together like a bundle or connected like a stream, with no one thing surviving from Baby Elvis through Rockin’ Elvis.
