Quisrtion: Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
COLLAPSE

Share an example of the self-fulfilling prophecy that you have seen operating in the real world, perhaps even examples of a self-fulfilling prophecy that you created yourself.

And what are the implications of the self-fulfilling prophecy for peoples education, careers, and relationships?

Please make sure you understand the self-fulfilling prophecy before answering this question; it is widely misunderstood and mischaracterized in popular culture.

ex 1 what my friend wrote example, I need one same idea

When reading the definition of self-fulfilling prophecy, I was able to understand how the concept effects many scanarios in my personal life. For example, when I go into new social situations my anxiety tends to get really bad. I overthink and convince myself that people will see me as too quiet and awkward to talk to. Before an event even takes place, I have usually already convinced myself that no one will like me. Because of this, I typically talk less than I normally would and simply observe my surroundings. If I do end up talking, I can tell that my body language is visually showing how uncomfortable I am in the situation. This results in me not fully participating in whatever the social activity may be, and spending more time in my own head than focusing on what is going on around me. As a result of my anxiety and predispositions, the encounter does normally result in awkwardness. When I am quiet and reserved, people tend to talk to me less- most likely assuming that I don’t want to talk. This is a prime example of a self-fulfilling prophecy because I am ultimately the reason for the lack of conversation. Me assuming that no one will like me, results in me not being open to communication, which then results in me not being easily approachable by others. If I entered social situations with confidence and expecting to be comfortable in the enviornment, then I would be more prone to start and hold conversations- people would be more prone to want to talk to me. Overall, my negative prediction is what makes the experience turn out to be negative.

Self fulfilling prophecies happen daily, whether they are big or small. They truly show that situations are as good or bad as we expect them to be. In education, if a student expects  to do bad on a test, they might study less in the assumption that no matter what they will fail. This would then result in a bad grade. This can also go hand in hand with carreers and relationships. People’s assumptions towards things have a huge influence on the way that things play out, and the overall result of a scenario. Self fulfilling prophecies show just how much influence we have on our own/other’s outcomes. The way that we view things are a huge factor in whether something turns out to be good or bad. I believe that when learning about this, the take away is that if people focus on the positives and believe in good outcomes, that we can have a huge influence on it coming true.

Ex 2

A Self-FulFilling Prophecy that I created was one with my grandfather. My grandfather for the last few years has been chronically depressed and has anxiety. It was been a very difficult time for my family to understand him and help him. He always refuses our care and wants to be left the alone majority of the time. He does not ever want to get out of bed, go on walks, or even eat at times. This past December, he just got a knee replacement surgery. The surgery went amazing and he has been doing well. I made the self-fulfilling prophecy that after his surgery he would not to want to go on walks, do physical therapy, or simply even get out of bed. These last few weeks his behavior has been consistent with my Self-Fulfilling prophecy. He needs to be able to walk a few laps around my house, get out of bed, and most importantly eat so he can get proper nutrients in his body. My grandfather’s behavior confirmed my self-fulfilling prophecy. The last few weeks have been difficult and it takes a lot of convincing for him to be able to do simple everyday life tasks. Some days are better than others, however, my grandfather’s recovery is a team effort and a work in progress.

Some implications of the self-fufilling prophecy for peoples’ education, careers, and relationships is the fact that people can easily make assumptions and have bias towards certain things. For example, in relationships, when an individual starts dating someone they might have an expectation that their partner will do certain tasks and behave a certain way towards them. When those tasks or that behavior is not met for that individual by their partner, the behavior proves that whatever thoughts and assumptions they were making are true. Another implication in a career based setting is disabilities. When someone sees an individual in a wheelchair for an example, the employer may believe that this person may not be able to do the job correctly. When they see that the I individual in a wheelchair may be struggling or doing certain tasks slower it affirms their self-fulfilling prophecy.
