TOPIC CLAIMS:
1.) Discussion and debate (argument) play an extremely important role in democracy.
2.) It is for this reason that full freedom of speech is essential in a democracy.
Requirements:
1. The paper must defend both of the claims made above.
2. The paper must use arguments and explanations offered in the course readings to defend the answer.
· The idea is to combine the ideas presented in the readings so far in order to defend the claim. This requires that you understand the claims made in the readings and how they can be used to defend democracy, political discussion, and freedom of speech.
· It is okay to also offer your own reasons and examples in support of the claim, but these reasons cannot contradict or undermine the arguments made by Aikin, Talisse, and Mill.
3. The paper should be in Microsoft Word format (doc. or docx.) and turned into CSC Online.
4. Use Times New Roman 11 point font. The paper should be double-spaced with 1” margins.
5. It should be at least 1000 words in length, but no longer than 1,500 words.
6. All sentences in the paper should be grammatically correct, and all words correctly spelled.
7. DO NOT rely on quotations from the articles or views you discuss.
· The point of this exercise is for you to show that you can explain complex philosophical arguments in your own words.
· It is best to steer clear from using them at all on the first draft of your paper. Your essay needs to make sense of the arguments without them.
· Quotes are used to drive home a point or for evidence of a claim. They should not be used to explain a point made by an author—that’s your job.
· If you use any quotes, they MUST be explained in your own words.
8. Appropriately cite any information you use or rely on. This requirement applies to quotations and to when you paraphrase an author’s ideas.
· You may use end notes, footnotes or parenthetical citations for this purpose. I do not care which style of formatting you use—I only care that you are consistent. There is no need to include a works cited page or bibliography if you use a method that includes full citations as footnotes or endnotes in the text. If you use parenthetical citation, you do need to include a works cited page.
