Years ago, many experts believed there would be another major pandemic of an infectious disease in the near future. They have since been proven correct when COVID-19 emerged in late 2019. There is some debate on whether or not we were prepared to handle such a major outbreak. After reading the CNN article about the risk of global pandemic https://www.cnn.com/2017/04/03/health/pandemic-risk-virus-bacteria/index.html, the CNN timeline of epidemics through history https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2014/10/health/epidemics-through-history/, and watching the video about the 1918 Influenza Pandemic think back on recent outbreaks including: influenza, SARS, Ebola, and MERS-CoV.
In your original post, address the following:
- How has COVID-19 compared (infectiousness, severity, deaths, etc) to other disease outbreaks?
- Do you think we were prepared to handle the this pandemic? Why or why not?
- From a public health perspective, what is the best course of action moving forward? How can we prevent this level of disruption in the future?
In your response posts, comment on a post advocating for different action. Do you (respectfully) agree or disagree with their suggestion? Be sure to support your responses with evidence from a scholarly source.
