Implicit bias represents the thoughts or feeling you were taught to think about someone or a group of people. This kind of bias lives in the back of your mind and often presents itself the form of explicit thoughts or questions regarding a certain group. One of the questions on the Love Has No Labels website refers to a person’s religion determining the stance on social issues (Questions to Self Reflect, n.d). This is one of my own implicit bias. Growing up in Southern California and moving to a small town in the Bible Belt of New Mexico, bordering Texas, I felt out of place a lot. As a waitress, I overheard conversations about liberals in California almost daily. Most of the town was Christian, pro second amendment and against Roe v. Wade. I felt like almost everyone felt this way because I heard it so often. Now, that I have identified my bias, it is important that I learn to stop marginalizing people. Everyone has their own life experiences and values that should be respected (Kim & Roberson, 2021). Instead of removing myself from the environment, I could have tried to understand by engaging in conversation and participating in town events to get to know people better (Kim & Roberson, 2021).
