In order to effectively reach my team members and students, I plan to continuously model servant leadership. This may seem obvious but it really makes all the difference when you’re actively practicing what you preach. Principle Nine states that servant leaders live their lives with their values and principles in mind (Wheeler, 2012). Doing this, as well as remaining honest and open with my team, will undoubtedly create not only a comfortable work environment but also one where everyone knows what’s going on as far as meeting goals. My team will feel confident knowing that I put trust in them to solve issues when I’m not around to make an immediate decision. They will also learn my leadership style and hopefully view me as a mentor, so when the opportunity for them to lead arises they will feel inspired and confident to take the reins. Including leadership development when speaking of professional development is also noteworthy (Wheeler, 2012). Providing my team with the tools to succeed is essential. Lastly, I would hold evaluations annually for not only my team, but also for myself. Feedback, positive and negative, is key for growth. With this growth, comes confidence and likely the desire to lead.
