An epigraph is a short quote at the beginning of a book or chapter that introduces its theme. To set our intentions for our work together this semester, I have gathered several epigraphs for our English 2500 class. I offer these passages to you as a way of organizing our thoughts about writing– its purpose and possibilities. Please read the following epigraphs. Then complete the writing exercise below, based on these epigraphs.

Poets and beggars, musicians and prophets, warriors and scoundrels, all creatures of that unbridled reality, we have had to ask but little of imagination, for our crucial problem has been a lack of conventional means to render our lives believable. Once you have read these epigraphs, craft your own original epigraph for the work you hope to complete in English 2500. Then, let it introduce 2 double spaced pages reflecting on how this epigraph will inform your writing and reading in the coming months. You can discuss your past relationship with literature and writing and your goals for the course. I look forward to reading these!
