Emergency medical dispatch (EMD) is simply the standard of care today. To fail to offer this level of care at the time of the call intake in a primary public safety answering point (PSAP) or 911 center lessens the opportunity for your patient(s) to have the most favorable outcome. To provide the most current, best practice recommendations in your own organization, it is helpful to further develop and enhance your understanding through a literature review.
Conduct a literature review of the benefits of implementing EMD in your community and/or agency. You may select one or more EMD programs as the focus of your review. Your analysis should address the following key areas:
- call triage tools (program resources),
- medical director involvement,
- dispatch of appropriate resources,
- training and continuing education, and
- quality assurance.
A literature review is a compilation or summary of the findings resulting from research into the concept of emergency medical dispatching, regardless of the specific program that may be implemented. You are expressing not your own opinion but objectively summarizing the views of others as it relates to the topic. These views are generally limited to professional or evidence-based because of research or expert investigation.

You do not need to make a recommendation for your community quite yet. This will come later in the course. For now, you are gathering information on the programs available for your community.
Your literature review must be a minimum of two pages in length, not counting the cover or reference pages. Include an introduction. Use APA style when writing your review. Cite any direct quotes or paraphrases from the source(s), and include any references used in your review on a references page.
You are required to use at least one source from the CSU Online Library. References should include no less than five academically credible or peer-reviewed sources. An academically credible source for this topic would be an industry-related website such as the sites provided in the Suggested Unit Resources.
