The implementation and roll-out of 911 has only occurred in the last few decades, depending on location. Its historical origins can be traced back to 1967, around the same time as EMS becoming more organized. Over time, the 911 centers have evolved and become more centralized. Full implementation in every state may not be complete.
For the Unit I Project, research the timeline of 911 in your state and community. Develop a timeline with descriptions for a minimum of the following four points. At least two additional points should be added as relevant to your local 911, and others may be added as needed depending on your community’s implementation. If one of the timeline items does not apply in your area or state, you may exclude this item from the timeline, but make a note as to why it does not apply at the end of your submission.
Timeline Points:
- local phone service makes 911 available for the community,
- state/local agency identified to serve as regulatory agency for 911 centers,
- agency/site identified to serve as a communication center for incoming 911 calls and dispatching of resources,
- enhanced 911 upgrades are made, and
- at least two points specific to your local 911.
Each timeline point should have at least one paragraph describing when and how the activity occurred.
Your timeline may be in a table in sequential order, or you may submit a timeline constructed in another format, with or without pictures, as a linear progression. The length of the full assignment may vary based upon the format used.
Utilize a minimum of two outside sources. All sources used should be academically credible. You may also interview professionals in your community who are familiar with the development of 911. All sources should be formatted using APA for both in-text and reference citations. References should be cited on a separate page.
