Eng. 1A Essay #2 (Compare/Contrast)

Directions:  Write a detailed essay in which discuss the role of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass’ writing in the abolition movement.  Both your thesis and restatement should mention the position or argument of the two authors.  Focus on three main points and provide details to support each one.  Each of the points you choose should be developed in a separate paragraph, and each paragraph should have its own supporting details that support the theme or category.  Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that announces that theme and the argument the authors were making.  You will need to use both sources (Uncle Tom’s Cabin and “The Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro”) in each body paragraph.  Be sure to use textual evidence (quotes) from both texts to support your ideas in each body paragraph (at least 2 relevant quotes, one from each author).  The essay itself is worth 100 pts., including the outline.  In addition, a Works Cited List is worth an additional 5 pts.  Do not assume that the reader has read the texts or is familiar with the anti-abolition arguments.  Part of your job is to provide sufficient background information to make your ideas clear to anyone who reads your essay.  Select only one of the prompts below.  DO NOT write on all 4 prompts.

Prompt #1: Discuss the various strategies or techniques of persuasion that Stowe and Douglass used to sway their readers to object to slavery.

Prompt #2: Discuss the arguments (legal, religious, personal, financial, racial) that Stowe and Douglass use to either defend or attack slavery.  In your discussion, be sure to comment on the effectiveness of the arguments (only pick 3 arguments).

Prompt #3: Discuss the logical, emotional, and ethical arguments that both Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass use to convey their opposition to slavery.

OR

Prompt #4: Both Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass point out the hypocrisy that is evident in various American institutions.  Discuss what institutions are most hypocritical and how the examples Stowe and Douglass provide support their opposition to slavery.
