ENGL 1302 Essay #1: Drama Analysis

(DO NOT USE THIS TITLE: Make up your own creativetitle)

For your first short essay, you willanalyze a play from our textbook: Water by the Spoonful by Quiara AlegraHudes. In order to perform your analysis, you will both critically read theplay and watch a full-length version of it presented by Texas StateUniversitys Department of Theatre and Dance. I recommend having yourtextbook/eBook open as you watch the play so that you can highlight andannotate the text as you are watching its delivery on stage.

For your essay, focus on one dramaticelement of the play (based on your readingof Chapter 26 in our textbook: character, plot, setting, theme, symbol, etc.)and analyze it closely. Sometimes other elements may factor into your analysis(for example, sometimes a character is also a symbol), but your analysis shouldstay clearly focused on ONLY ONE primary element of drama. DO NOT write onelong, rambling summary of the play.

Youressay will be 600-800 words and must reveal critical thinking about theliterary situation. Format your essay according to MLA guidelines (like this sheet, which is a template):

        MLA-style paper heading, pagination

        Times New Roman, 12-point font

Double-spaced lines with noextra space between paragraphs

        Appropriate citation of any quotedmaterial

MLA-style works cited page for any citedsources

Iwill not grade any essay that does not observe MLA conventions; if you turn inan essay that is not MLA appropriate, I will reject it and reduce your grade by10% for every day that it is late until you have it correctly formatted andresubmitted.
