1. For Essay Two you will focus on Imagery and how it works in a poem.

   IMAGERY: A common term of variable meaning, imagery includes the “mental pictures” that readers experience with a passage of literature. It signifies all the sensory perceptions referred to in a poem, whether by literal description, allusion, simile, or metaphor. Imagery is not limited to visual imagery; it also includes auditory (sound), tactile (touch), thermal (heat and cold), olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), and kinesthetic sensation (movement). 

   Select one of the poems (except Kinnells) and look at how imagery works in the poem. What sensory perceptions does the poet create? How does he/she use imagery to achieve meaning? 

   Your central objective is to articulate how your chosen poet uses imagery in his/her poem. Do not offer a summary of the poem, but discuss the effects of a particular image or the juxtaposition that is created when placed next to other images. It is important to make claims about what the images create; do not just identify them. 

   Please refer to the Writing About Poetry handout. 

   Essay Details: 
   Length: 2 pages, double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman Font 
   Format: Academic voice this means your essay is written in the third person, no I, etc. 
   MLA formatting is needed for the heading and citation.
