Many of you are aware of the environmental crisis occurring in Australia due to rampant wildfires across the country.  In the lecture unit this week we discussed how geospatial technology can be used to monitor and visualize environmental conditions such as global carbon dioxide concentration, drought conditions, wildfire potential, etc.  This breakout exercise focuses solely on the ongoing wildfires in Australia and how near real-time geospatial technology is being used to track the situation.  Visit the website Fire Watch at .  This tool was made possible by the government of Australia and Edith Cowan University.

Questions:

  1. Geographically speaking, where is the greatest concentration of wildfires in Australia?

  1. What urban areas appear to be impacted? What are the populations of these urban areas (use outside resources to investigate)?

  1. Display the “Greeness (vegetation)” layer. Why are the fires primarily located where they are?

  1. Display the “Burnt Areas” layers. What has been the geographic progression of the burnt areas over the last two years?

Let’s face it, these days we’re living in a digital world – road, maps, directions, and property maps are all available in digital form with a few clicks of a mouse.  With everything available digitally (and easily portable and accessible, thanks to laptops, tablets, and phones), is there still a need for printed maps?  Do you really need to carry around a paper map of the road network in Framingham, Massachusetts or will a mapping app on your smartphone suffice to find your location and get you where you want to go?  Are paper map collections at universities and libraries relics of the past, or are they still useful resources?  When might it be necessary to have access to such a collection?

When you’re driving a long distance and have GPS, satellite maps, and Internet mapping capabilities, is it necessary to have a printed map of the area you’re traveling through?  If your answer is yes, describe a situation in which it would be necessary.  If your answer is no, why are printed maps still available?
