this paper will be based on the chapter selections from Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford. In total we read chapter 1 (link), chapter 7 (link), and chapter 9 (link). You will also be considering the video on universal basic income by Yang, which we will cover in this week’s discussion (link).
Essay #3: The Automation Revolution

Your Job: In 4 or more double spaced pages for the final draft answer the below question. Our first essay focused on the number of paragraphs. This is a change. 4 pages is the minimum, but I think your goal should be at least 4.5 pages for this paper. Only having 5 total paragraphs will NOT be enough.
Considering the amount of possible job loss in the near future due to automation, as well as other issues described in our readings from Rise of the Robots by Martin Ford, what in your opinion should be done as a solution to keep our society stable and functioning? Is something like having a guaranteed universal basic income (UBI) in the United States, like Andrew Yang recommended in his campaign a good solution? Or is there something else that should be done either in addition to, or instead of, UBI?
Keys for success:
- Your essay must be organized, beginning with an intro (review link) that has a hook, background on Ford’s book (do not summarize each chapter separately; instead, lump the all together), and a thesis statement (review link) that expresses your opinion to the above question.
- Your essay needs to have organized body paragraphs. I highly recommend you use the PIE strategy (link for review).
- Finally, your essay needs to end with a concluding paragraph (link for review), which can be reviewed at this link.
- Your essay must be composed primarily of your own opinions, only using the reading to either back up your argument, or to argue against. I do not want just an explanation or summary of the book (except for in the intro background), nor do I want just a long description of the issue of automation.
- You must directly quote at least once all three chapters we read from Rise of the Robots by Ford to support your points. You should have one quote per body paragraph that proves your point. Present a range of ideas from the book.
- You are NOT REQUIRED to quote from the video on Andrew Yang’s proposal from our discussion, BUT YOU CAN if you think it will make your argument stronger. However, the majority of your quotes should still reference Martin Ford’s book (see above bullet point).
