Essay Assignment I John Adams Part 1, Episode 1 25 points John Adams was the first VicePresident of the U.S. (under first President, George Washington) and then the second President of the United States. He was a Massachusetts trial lawyer who did not originally aspire to be a leader in the movement toward American independence from Great Britain, as was his wealthier, more activist cousin, Samuel Adams. While a member of the Continental Congress, John Adams became one of the primary proponents if not THE primary proponentof independence, and he assisted Thomas Jefferson in overseeing the drafting of the Declaration (though Jefferson was most assuredly the primary author). In the election of 1800, Adams was defeated in his run for a second term as President by his Vice President, Thomas Jefferson. He died on July 4th, 1826: the same day as Thomas Jefferson, his often political rival, but good friend. His wife, Abigail Smith Adams, was a remarkable woman for the time, welleducated (not a common thing for women in the 18th century)though not formally; and his most trusted partner, advisor, and closest friend. His eldest son, John Quincy Adams, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, served as Secretary of State to President James Monroe, and was elected sixth President of the United States in 1824.
