This is a class on Art + Society and there are many ways to enter in. In this section I’m asking that you examine yourself as well as people that you are close with and/or characters within films that you’ve watched or books that you’ve read.
Archetypes can be defined as tendencies that exist in people that influence how they interact with society around them and how in turn society interacts with them.
Examples of archetypes are: Leader, Innocent, Caregiver, Hero/Heroine, Magician, Sage, Creator, Rebel, Explorer, Lover, Jester, Everyperson.
These archetypes exist and interact in our world and in visual and theatrical art forms. There are thousands of narratives that use these archetypes in an infinite play with each other to create the world drama that we all must live and work in. Our world and culture is every changing, but it’s important to note how societal constructions might emphasize how certain archetypes look and who they are assigned to via the media, in books you read or in music that you listen to. Please try to separate the message that you believe society is giving you with your own personal understanding and belief system. Your own personal understanding is what is important here.
Each of you bring your own ideas and experiences to the class and so it is important that you reflect on this concept deeply and convey an honest response in this first reflection essay.
If you can’t think of anything right away, sit quietly for at least ten minutes and think about your self -  just free write about each archetype. From there try to think about which archetype or archetypes you believe you fit into. For example, you might love to write short stories based on the world around you, and you also enjoy taking care of your family. You might consider ways in which you are the Creator and Caregiver in this scenario.
Carl Jung, the Swiss psychologist first wrote about the concept of Archetypes in his work  in  psychoanalysis. He used these ideas as well as dream interpretation, and interpreting unconscious symbols to better understand human kind.

Note: please choose at least one archetype from the examples given – but  feel free to add your own archetypes as well in addition to one on the list if it makes sense.
                              Now…
Write about yourself or someone you know very well or someone you have observed in a story that you’ve read or character in a film.  Identify one or more archetypes that flow through them and answer the following questions:
How does this archetype (s) relate on a personal level?
What role does this archetype (s) play in our society currently?
Who benefits from this archetype (s)?
Why is this archetype (s) valued or on the contrary why is it undervalued?
