Project Objective: This module introduces the concepts of friction and assemblage as ways of thinking about globalization. The idea of friction draws our attention to how the practices of individual people help create the movement of commodities, goods, people, ideas, technologies, images and other things around the world.
Criteria: A successful essay will
- integrate the concept of friction
- show a clear understanding of the reading and lecture
- demonstrate an anthropological perspective
- be written in clearly understandable, complete sentences following the generally accepted rules of standard English.
- be a clearly written, polished paper
Process: To answer write this project you will need to:
- Review the reading for this module: “Imsukuhum Kulhum! Modernity and Morality in Egyptian Children’s Consumption”.
- Choose one of the persons discussed in the reading: Alicia and Meagan, Ismail, Mrs. Maryam, Dr. Reem, Soraya, Yaseen
- Brainstorm: Consider this persons actions and how they create friction in Anna Tsings sense
- Brainstorm: Consider the contexts in which the person is acting: cultural ideas about play, family structures, economic systems, product marketing, availability and cost of goods, media, religious, political and social values, and any others that might be relevant.
- Write a short essay describing how their engagements could be thought of in terms of the concepts of friction.
This reflection paper should be a maximum of 2 pages, double spaced with one inch margins. Upload it as a doc file or pdf or link to a shared Google Doc.
