General Directions
In your narrative recall an experience (s) of brief or long
duration that taught you something important about your
relationship with language, with reading, with writing, and/or
with speaking. Focus on a person(s) who helped or hindered
your efforts, and the direct or indirect messages conveyed by
this person to you. Write using first person point of view, and
describe one or more of your encounters with this person to
illustrate their impact. Engage your reader’s interest by using
vivid details to describe people, places, objects and settings.
Include dialogue between or among characters to illustrate the
experience and to add drama and immediacy.
Audience
You are writing this literacy narrative for your classmates.
Purpose
Your narrative should communicate the autobiographical
significance of this event: How has this event or experience
affected you and your view of the world and other people?
What insights have you gained? What has this experience
taught you or shown you about yourself or others?
Criteria for Evaluation
Your paper will focus on a generalization about the influences
that affect people’s efforts to learn important lessons. You will
provide a quantity of detail to develop, illustrate, and support
your generalization; you may include at least one image, video
or audio clip to help illustrate vour narrative. if vou wish (not
required). Organize these details in a clear sequence using
appropriate transitions between paragraphs. Use MLA style to
format the manuscript.
Length: 3 double-spaced pages, minimum. Use 12-point Times
New Roman font.
