A. Professional Responsibility

Page 1 Being Ethical

Psychotherapy as a profession belongs to those areas of activity where human is the center of interest and influence. The interpersonal relationships established by the counsellor always have an ethical dimension and involve interference in the way of the existence of another human being. These circumstances determine the importance of compliance with professional ethics in counsellors’ activities and justify the imposition of high ethical requirements on them. Being an ethical counsellor requires ethical awareness and knowledge, the ability of ethical reasoning skills, and motivation to act ethically.

  • Discuss your current knowledge about the course content and what you hope to learn in the course. How do you plan to apply what you learn to your own personal and professional life?

  • Do you think ethics can be learned? Or is it a question of how you were raised, and what experience can you have in this regard? Explain.

Page 2 Making Ethical Decision
In the course of their work, practitioners will confront dilemmas that are difficult to resolve. Counsellors at work often meet situations that require sound ethical decision-making ability. Determining the right course to take in the face of a difficult ethical dilemma, and this can be a challenge. To help advisors, there is a Code of Ethics that underpins ethical decision making. This document refers to principles that help in making ethical decisions and presents a model that professionals can use when dealing with ethical questions and dilemmas in their work.

Review what the codes of ethics have to say about this topic and incorporate this into your discussions:

  • In your counselling practice, when you face your first dilemma(s), what do you think is going to be the most difficult part of acting ethically? Identify the situation in which the codes of ethics fail to provide definitive advice for professionals treating clients and describe the steps a professional should take to resolve ethics issues when this happens.

  • Review the steps of the ethical decision making model. After applying a model, consulting with colleagues and applying a code of ethics, how do counsellors know they have made a correct decision? How can we determine if we have done the “right” thing?
