This week, our topic is Chapter 10, Euthanasia in Ethics Theory and Contemporary Issues.. The ethical question as I see it is this: does a person have the moral right to decide whether and when to end their own life? Is that morally ok? The difficulty I see with the question is that we normally see life as the most definitive good we have. But the question of euthanasia asks whether there are circumstances where life becomes so burdensome that it is no longer a benefit, and so taking it away is a benefit. Can it be a good to take away life? Now, from this starting point arise a list of related questions, questions involving rights and responsibilities, different kinds of situations, etc. Below, I will put up a few questions based on the reading from the chapter. Pick one question and write about a paragraph in response. Make use of the chapter in your answer.
1. Can you imagine circumstances that make life not worth living? If you can imagine such circumstances, does it follow that some form of euthanasia is morally acceptable?
2. What is the difference between active and passive euthanasia? How does Physician Assisted Suicide relate to the distinction between passive and active euthanasia?
3. Give a brief description of the Terry Schiavo case. What was the legal question in her case, and how does that question differ from the moral question?
4. How does the Karen Ann Quinlan case raise the issue of "avtive nonvoluntary" euthanasia? Give a brief discription of her situation, and then give an answer to the question.
