This week’s assignment requires you to consider the lessons learned in working with survivors of intergenerational and historical trauma.

Assume you were asked by a community health clinic to provide advice on developing a trauma recovery program for refugees. A key component that has been identified in research is to bring in leaders from the refugee group to assist in understanding cultural factors influencing responses to trauma. However, it is also important to provide these leaders with sufficient information on traumatic stress.

Your task is to create a report for the clinic’s staff to assist in their planning outreach to the target population.

In your report, be sure to address the following:

• Present an overview of the types of traumatic experiences the target population may have faced (NOTE: Research indicates that survivors often have faced three or more incidents.)
• Review the top five symptoms that indicate traumatic response.
• Explain the merits and drawbacks of assessing trauma in refugee communities. Validated trauma screening instruments include the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, the Resettlement Stressor Scale, and the War Trauma Scale. Measures of psychological distress that have been adopted for use in the refugee population include the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Impact of Event Scale, and the Post-Traumatic Symptom Scale-30.
• Provide recommendations for how to address the challenges involved with working with a population of refugees. These can include cultural stigma attached to seeking help, language barriers, lack of understanding trauma by family and community leaders, and cultural communication (i.e., talk therapy).
