· Read the assignment sheet carefully (attached below, also available on UB Learns)
· Start researching commonly misunderstood medical terms that you feel require clarification for a non-expert audience. [You may share your ideas with me if you are having trouble settling with one.]
· Think about a specific audience that may benefit from this extended definition. For example, a detailed college newspaper article on mental health issues among students would be helpful for students facing mental health issues but are not aware of it. Alternatively, as I mentioned in my introduction video, a web article or an op-ed clarifying the distinction between cardiac arrest and heart attack may be helpful for readers from communities where heart-related diseases are rampant. These are just examples; please choose a different topic after your research. Whatever you choose, make sure that your context, audience, and topic are aligned with one another. Doing so will make your essay stand out, and you will see that it is a lot more readable if you speak directly to your target audience.
· Once you have decided on your topic, audience, and context, you may start with some freewriting and form a structure for your essay. All of this should not take more than six to eight hours between Wednesday and Thursday.
· Finally, after you have a grip on what your essay will sound like, you can start work on the first draft. Do not try to complete the final draft by Friday. It is okay if it is rough around the edges at this stage. You do not have to upload the essay on UB learns for grading this week. You only need 750 words draft and a 250 words memo ready for peer review by Friday.
