Commission a New Work from an Old Composer
You have inherited a large sum of money, with the caveat that some of the money must be used to commission a new piece of classical music. In this alternate universe, time machines exist! So, you can pick any dead or living composer we have studied from class to write a new piece by sending them a letter via the time-traveling US Postal Service.
Write a letter to a composer from this class commissioning a new piece of music. Use the following format to guide you:
Dear Maestro (male) /Maestra (female) last name ,
Introduction Paragraph– Explain a little bit about you as a person and your relationship with music. Respectfully ask him/her to consider your request to compose a new piece of music for you.
1st paragraph– Why have you chosen him/her as your composer? Refer to the work we learned about in class and highlight musical aspects of the piece that inspire or entertain you.
2nd paragraph– Find a SECOND piece from your composer that we DID NOT discuss in class. Listen to it and highlight two musical aspects of the piece that you enjoyed in this paragraph.
3rd paragraph– Explain what you would like in your new piece of commissioned music. This could include: what type of ensemble/instrument/voice you would like (and why), if you would prefer to have the piece be programmatic, give the composer the topics (idea, poem, story, painting, animal, person, etc) you would like covered. Be creative! Maybe you would like your composer to collaborate with another artist or some other “outside the box” idea.
Conclusion: Wrap up your letter with a conclusion. Two ideas are:
- A way this person/music has been meaningful in your life.
- Include a personal tidbit about the composer (Ex. Maestro Mozart, I recently read that your favorite drink was ______- I hope I might take you out for some after the premiere of our piece to celebrate!) Personal biographies of composers are easily found through research- make sure the fact is accurate.
