Feminist Criticism of Rear Window Outline

Prompt: Your assignment is to write an analytical essay applying the Feminist Critical Perspective to a short story. You have two stories to read and choose from, “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin or “The Chaser” by John Collier. (Both stories are included in Springboard.)

Remember the assumptions of Feminist Criticism:

  • A pervasively patriarchal society conveys the notion of male dominance through the images of women in its texts.

  • Many literary texts lack complex female figures and deem the female reader as an outsider, or require her to assume male values in terms of perception, feelings, and actions.

  • Issues of gender and sexuality are central to artistic expression.

  • Fictional portrayals of female characters often reflect and reinforce stereotypical social and political attitudes toward women.

  • Texts authored by women may have different viewpoints from those in texts authored by men.

I. Thesis Statement: Something along the lines of: “By viewing this story through the lens of feminist criticism the message/theme/idea/intent of ________________ becomes apparent”

II. Topic Sentence (linked to thesis):  One of the assumptions of feminist criticism is that [paraphrase, don’t quote, one of the assumptions]. Using that assumption, the reader notices…”

a. Supporting evidence from story:

i. Explanation of proof (How does this prove your thesis; how does it link to the message of the story?):

b. Supporting evidence from story:
