  • Your essay is to be posted on the discussion board. Do not submit it any other way.
  • You may post your essay answer from now through the day of the final.

For the essay, you must answer the following questions:

Essay #1 (400 words): “Chandra, calm down! Chandra, calm down!” You could feel the steam coming out of your ears as your seven-year-old daughter throws a box of Fruity Pebbles into your shopping cart. You remove it and put it on the shelf – despite the fact that you’re no longer in the cereal aisle and it sticks out like a sore thumb next to the jars of marinara sauce – but you don’t care. All you want is for this nightmare of a shopping trip to be over.

“Oh, I love the name Chandra,” says a white-haired woman witnessing the scene. “How did you come up with such a lovely name for your daughter?”

“Actually, my name is Chandra, and I’m trying to stay calm because I am about to blow up,” you tell her. As the words leave your lips, your daughter tosses a six-pack of vanilla pudding into the cart. As that point, you simply lose it. You berate your daughter to such an extent that a crowd gathers in your aisle to watch the scene unfold. Once you notice someone taking out his smartphone to record this episode, you decide that you’d rather not be in a video that goes viral on social media, so you stop. But your daughter seats herself on the floor and bursts into tears.

You crouch toward her and say, “Oh, I’m sorry, Desiree, I didn’t mean to scream at you like that.”

Just then, your coworker, Ms. Gedman, comes walking by with her cart. “Oh my, I’m so embarrassed,” you say to no one in particular. “I wish the floor would open up right now and swallow me whole!”

“Chandra, you have nothing to be embarrassed about,” Ms. Gedman says, putting her hand on your shoulder. “As the school psychologist, I’ve seen much, much worse.”

You stand up and wipe away a tear with the back of your hand. Ms. Gedman reaches into her purse and offers you a tissue, which you take.

“I don’t know what’s gotten into Desiree lately,” you say. “We had her tested for ADHD last year and they said she doesn’t have it, and yet she just seems to be acting up all the time.”

“Yeah, it’s possible that she doesn’t have it but maybe she has a problem with emotional regulation,” Ms. Gedman offers.

“What do you mean?” you ask.

“Why not come by tomorrow during my lunch break and we’ll talk?” she offers. “Because emotional regulation can help not only Desiree but also you.”

When you meet with Ms. Gedman, what does she tell you about what emotional regulation is and how it can be instilled in both children and adults?

Essay #2 (250 words) (a) What do you consider the most important thing you learned in this class this semester? (b) How will you apply the information that you learned in class to your personal life or career (or both)?

  • Label each essay Part 1 and Part 2, and put them together in one message.
  • You can mention what we have discussed in class.
  • You must also use at least three outside sources for Part 1 and one outside source for Part 2, and cite your sources so that you avoid plagiarism.
  • The sources should be given within the essays so that the reader knows clearly which information is from which source.
  • When giving the sources, you must provide enough information for the reader to find the citation. So writing “The New York Times” is not enough. You may provide a hyperlink to the web page you are citing from or give the name of the article, the author’s name, the date (if one is given), and where the article was published.
  • Additionally, the material that you quote directly should make up no more than 30 percent of your essay answer. This means that you do “most of the talking” and use the citations to support your assertions.
  • Essay #1 must be at least 400 words, and Essay #2 must be at least 250 words.
  • The textbook should not be used as a direct source.
  • In addition to posting your essay on the message board, you must also respond to at least three of your classmates’ posts. Your response should not be just “I agree with you.” Rather, your response should be specific about something your classmates wrote. It should add an intelligent perspective to the conversation.
