Russell McCutcheon asserts that scholars using cognitive/neurobiological/scientific approaches religion are falling into similar traps as colleagues who have used other methods in their work:

And this is the problem with the neurobiological approach—it takes what some of us understand to be a variable (i.e., historical, contingent, local, etc.) discursive object as a settled matter of eternal biological fact (i.e., ahistorical, necessary, universal, etc.), thereby interiorizing, medicalizing, and thus normalizing what, some of us would argue, is a contestable and always ongoing social, discursive event (i.e., not religion but, instead, the very act and implications of naming, treating, etc., this or that as religion) (p. 91).

If you are working individually, first briefly explain what McCutcheon means in this quotation. Second, relate what he has to say in the article regarding what he sees as problematic about the academic study of religion to TWO of the following scholars covered in the course:

·       Wilfred Cantwell Smith

·       Mircea Eliade

·       Clifford Geertz

·       Naomi Goldenberg

If you are working with one or two other students, first briefly explain what McCutcheon means in this quotation. Second, relate what he has to say in the article regarding what he sees as problematic about the academic study of religion to Emile Durkheim and TWO of the following scholars covered in the course:

·       Wilfred Cantwell Smith

·       Mircea Eliade

·       Clifford Geertz

·       Naomi Goldenberg

NOTA BENE:

·       If working alone, aim for 700 – 1000 words.

·       If working with one or two other students aim for 1000 – 1500 words total.

·       Whether working alone or not, do not include a cover page but do include name(s) at the top of the first page.

·       Use citations appropriately and consistently. Any system will do (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.).

·       Your work is due at 11:59 pm on Thursday, 16 December. NO EXTENSIONS. This is a challenging assignment so start early, complete a draft, set aside, revisit and revise repeating as necessary, submit.

·       As a courtesy to your reader, proofread and edit rigorously to catch grammatical and spelling errors. As usual, I will be taking such errors into account while grading.

This is a tough assignment. Give yourself enough time to complete it.

Good luck with all your exams. Hope to see you around campus in person next term. Stay safe.
