Final Technical Report Assignment

“Improving the lives of the 5 billion people whose main concern is to stay alive by the end of each day on our planet is no longer an option for engineers; it is an obligation.”

Dr. Bernard Amadei, Engineers Without Borders – USA Founder

Engineers have been providing solutions for the benefit of human civilization from the beginning of time –from creating the wheel to building aqueducts to generating electricity to launching digital communication to creating virtual entertainment and developing technology for use in healthcare, food production, transportation, and space exploration among other things.  Yet, despite all these innovations, many of the world’s peoples still suffer egregiously. As we glean from the epigraph above, a successful day for billions of people simply means being alive by the end of the day. But, as Amadei, stresses, engineers can intervene in the challenges, small and great, plaguing our world that result from extreme poverty, poor infrastructure, and inadequate food, healthcare, water, and energy sources. The question you now need to address is how — how do engineers solve the world’s problems?

Task:

Write an exploratory report discussing a global problem experienced by refugees that engineers are working to address. To begin writing this report, contemplate the following questions:

1.       What are the pressing needs that refugee populations have? What do they need to live a life worth living?

2.       What is one need (i.e. food, clothing, water, shelter) that engineers can help address?

3.       Write a report based on the rhetorical context, requirements, and components shown below.

Rhetorical Context:

You are an engineering student who has been asked to offer a report addressing the topic of how engineers offer solutions to the world’s problems. Your report will be read by an audience of students who have an interest in engineering but do not know yet whether they want to become engineers. The goal of your report is to help these students have a clearer understanding of the kind of projects that engineers perform and the value of such projects for the world’s peoples.

Because these students have no engineering knowledge, your report cannot be too technical – – i.e., it can’t be too lengthy, data-oriented, scientific, or process/explanation-oriented. In short, you need to offer substantive information but in an uncomplicated way that refers to and uses sources that you can explain easily to your audience.

Because your report will be one of several reports the audience reads, you do not have to cover a range of topics. Instead, you will offer a focused discussion on one topic that will be presented in a problem and solution format to help your audience quickly understand the value and impact of the work that engineers do. But you will also include a reflection section to show your audience how researching and discussing the problem you are focusing on has impacted you personally and professionally.  This last section may potentially have the most influence over your audience in helping think about whether they themselves may want to become an engineer.

Report Requirements:

·         Two-five pages double spaced

·         One graphic of the map of the area being referenced

Ø  Map graphic may be substituted with images of the refugee camp, people, or local physical environment of the area being referenced

·         One image of the solutions being offered

Ø  More than one image may be included

·         Two – four reputable resources (articles, website, videos) whose content you will summarize and use to build your content.

o   Use more sources as needed to build your content

o   Feel free to use the UN Sustainable Development Goals website and the video resources provided via Low Stakes set 2

o   Use easy to understand and explain resources (avoid those that are too technical!)  You can use the following:

§  Reputable magazines & newspapers such as Time, Discover, or NYTimes

§  Reputable news websites such as National Public Radio at or the BBC at

§  Reputable engineering-oriented websites such as or Engineers Without borders at .

o   Feel free to use the library databases to find articles – See my video How to use library databases located in the Resources folder under the Content section in Blackboard.

·         Addresses the rhetorical context and incorporates the compartmentalized report sections discussed below.

·         Apply course instruction concerning effective technical writing practices (visual and verbal elements).

·         Incorporates APA formatting via in-text citations and a References page

Report Components:

Part I: Identifying the global problem: Create an appropriate subheading here

In this portion of the report, you will need to provide content that helps your reader gain some background understanding of the problem you are raising. As you build the discussion here, you are leading up to an engineering solution that will be discussed in the next section of the report.

Here are some suggested questions that should be addressed in this section:

What is the problem? Where and how long has it been taking place? What political, cultural, or environmental factors contribute to it? Whom does it affect directly/indirectly? What are the short- and long-term consequences?

Part II: Solutions to the global problem:   Create an appropriate subheading here

In this portion of the report, you will need to provide content to help make your reader aware of what is being done to address the global problem you outlined in Part I. In short, what kind of projects and work are engineers performing to solve the problem you have identified?

Part III: Reflection Analysis:  Create an appropriate subheading here

In this portion of the report, you will be moving beyond the academic exercise of performing a writing assignment to demonstrate your self-awareness of what you have learned about yourself in the course of exploring a global problem.

If you offer a detailed, developed, meaningful reflection, this portion of the report could be the most influential factor in helping the report achieve its original purpose – namely, to help your intended audience become aware of the value of engineering and to consider how this profession might bring them personal and professional fulfillment.

Your reflection needs to address two aspects of your understanding:

Ø  Your personal understanding: Are global problems as insurmountable as they might seem? How does this assignment make you think about your own life and the resources available to you? How might you apply what you learned to your own life?

Ø  Your understanding as a future engineer: What were your engineering ambitions/goals before completing this assignment? Have they changed, expanded, or become more nuanced? Would you say that social responsibility and ethical integrity comprise important aspects of the engineering profession? Do you think future engineering students should be exposed to humanitarian-oriented engineering projects?

Checklist for Revision:

§  Follow report instructions addressing: Format, Components, In-Text Citations, References

§  Produce an easy-to-understand report that meets the target audience’s needs (no excessively technical information

§  Apply effective research methods to find appropriate, relevant sources concerning a given global problem and the solutions engineers offer to address it

§  Demonstrate awareness of specific global issues and problems as evidenced by  informative, relevant, and cohesive content in Part I & II

§  Demonstrate attention to effective technical writing practices regarding visual & verbal aspects Demonstrate Clarity, Concision, Comprehensiveness

§  Demonstrate attention to proofreading – Verbal Content does not impede meaning; minimal typos, spelling mistakes, or sentence level mistakes
