The idea that God was a great craftsman who had assembled the universe and set it in motion spurred empirical experimentation and intellectual inquiry, for it was believed that if human beings could discover the fundamental principles that kept the great machine in motion they could achieve mastery over it and take charge of their own history" (Davis et al. 342-43). First, read the excerpt from the Autobiography by Benjamin Franklin.
