A Gap Analysis can be defined as the determination of the difference between current knowledge (what are we doing) and current Evidence Based Practice (what we should be doing). Gaps can occur in knowledge, skills or practice.

Steps in Performing a Gap Analysis

  1. Identify a NEED (Health Problem) by conducting a Needs Assessment (should have accomplished this via Windshield Survey)
  2. Identify if the gap based on knowledge, skill or practice? Then identify what is the BEST PRACTICE in the literature
  3. How does research address and support your community, health need or gap? Discuss best practices to close the gap.
  4. Determine the purpose of the activity what do you propose?
  5. Then develop (3) learning objectives to closing the gap
