EXAM III   ESC1000   November 2019

The exam is to be completed on your own, including both sketches and text. Submissions deemed to be copied from other students will receive zeros.

Where to find the information?

This is an open book “exam”. The sources (textbook pages, video lectures) to be used are listed in the questions below. I would strongly caution against going outside of these sources and using the internet as there are no guarantees the information is correct and it may lead to confusion. Furthermore, it may be presented in an overly simplistic way that may not be appropriate. All information is provided within the textbook and video lectures. The expected depth of the answers is that to which the material is covered in the material provided.

Length and submission instructions

Each of the two questions should be answered on one full 8.5” x 11” page, including sketches

Thus, your submitted exam will be a single two- to three-page pdf document (i.e., one file, NOT two separate ones).

We will not grade any additional pages, so adhere to the page-limit instructions!!!

The pages should be in portrait orientation and submitted with the text right-side-up (not sideways or upside-down) because once it is submitted, we have no way of rotating it so that we can read it. It is your responsibility to make sure that  (1) the submission has been successfully completed and (2) the orientation is correct.

Approach

First, do not wait until the last day to complete this. Although not difficult, the answers and sketches you create will take some organizing of thoughts, text, and sketches. I would strongly recommend that you make some preliminary sketches with text that has all of the information that you would like to include.

You will need to make some practice sketches with preliminary text in order to gauge the amount of space your answers will take up. Once you have the information, find a way to present it in the appropriate space. Note that you can use a single sketch for multiple parts of a question if appropriate – so you need not make a new sketch for each part.

The sketches are an important part of your explanation so do not view them as just something you need to include. They help tell the story so they must be neat, accurate, labeled, and appropriate to the questions.

Do not include material (text or sketches) not relevant to the specific questions that have been asked. The questions are not meant as tell me everything you know about the subject, rather they address very specific aspects of the processes and features.

There is no single way to present the information. Your goal is to produce a complete, accurate, illustrated, and concise explanation of the processes and features assigned. Quality submissions may look quite different as long as the information is there. For the questions given, most or all explanations describing specific features or processes can be done in one or two well thought out sentences. These are not long explanatory essays! Your work should be created with the mindset that you are the teacher trying to explain these features and processes to your student! Points will be deducted for lack of information, incorrect information, poor/inaccurate/missing sketches, lack of labeling of important features on sketches, illegible writing/sketches, not following instructions, and providing more text than instructed.

As mentioned on the syllabus, you can do this neatly by hand and scan it to a pdf or use a computer drawing program.

You are to do all of this work on your own, without consulting anyone else, including tutors or fellow students

 (1) Tides    (1 page maximum)

  1. With the aid of a neatly labeled sketch explain what causes ocean tides, how many high and low tides each day (and why?), and the time between tides (and why?).
  2. On a second sketch, label and explain what is meant by a neap tide and what factors lead to these conditions, and how often they occur.

See section 16.3

(2) Electromagnetic radiation, the atmosphere, and greenhouse effect  (1 page maximum)

Draw the electromagnetic spectrum showing all wave types from Gamma to Radio waves

Indicate the direction in which wavelength increases/decreases and frequency increases/decreases

Show the largest and smallest values of frequency and wavelength on your diagram

Using colored pencils, sketch visible light part of the spectrum

Given your life experiences, which wavelengths are most dangerous to humans? Explain very briefly with examples

Indicate on your electromagnetic spectrum (1) the range of most of the radiation received by the earth (emitted by the sun) and (2) the range of most radiation emitted from the Earth

In three sentences or less explain why the interactions (or lack thereof) of our atmosphere with these ranges is important in controlling our surface temperatures on Earth.

See Section 17.7 and pages 726-729

(3) Air temperature and pressures    (use a third page if needed)

As I am writing this exam it is 60°F outside – convert this temperature to degrees Celsius

This summer it reached 32°C some days – convert this to degrees Fahrenheit

SHOW YOUR MATH! No credit with showing the calculations.

Explain what is meant by Absolute zero (or 0 Kelvin)

See Section 17.4
