Stephen Prothero, author of God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the Worldand Why Their Differences Matter (2010), challenges the classical and popular contention by Huston Smith, author of The Religions of Man (1958), that religions are essentially the same or different paths up the same mountain.*Note, these are not assigned readings for the course; they are simply mentioned here for context. Prothero contends, for example, that religions have very different conceptions of human nature, of the primary problem of human life, and the solution to this problem. 1. Choose one of the monotheistic/Abrahamic traditions (Judaism, Christianity, or Islam) and one other non-Abrahamic tradition from the course.
2. Use these two traditions to illustrate why you believe all religions are essentially the same OR essentially different.
