Assignment Instructions

Today’s challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write an analysis of one Socratic-style back-and-forth interaction between two characters, commonly called "stichomythia" in literary circles, from Oedipus the King. Specifically, I want you to analyze what the two central positions are in the debate, and how each character is developing their rhetorical position through ethos, pathos, and logos. As always, we’re aiming for about a page here. 

Objectives

1. Students will be able to identify a variety of genres, forms, and literary elements.
2. Students will be able to analyze literary texts and articulate their findings orally and in writing.

Expectations/Grading Criteria

Journals that recieve full credit will write at the definitional level: they should identify the moment from the play being analyzed, identify lines spoken by each character that demonstrate each rhetorical element, and explain how those moments develop rhetoric.
