How can the possibility to be healthy be assured and available to everyone,everywhere.
What is it that we are willing to let go of to get what we want?What do we need to let go of to have health equity?
Health equity exists when all people have the resources they needto maintain their health. The idea of health equity acknowledges that theseresources will be different from person to person and community to community,given the impact of different historical legacies, physical and social environments,and structural barriers. To successfully achieve health equity by addressingthe factors that impede it, and uncovering the resources required and desiredby individuals and communities to attain it we need to suspend our currentunderstanding of what we think we know about how to achieve health andwell-being. In fact, we may be called to deeply examine certain unfamiliarstructures and systems that produce inequities. Examples of structural issuesthat demand our attention include:
Neighborhoods withdisproportionally high concentrations of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease,but limited access to affordable, nutritious food
High rates of asthma among residents in social assistance housingplaced near where air and water quality are negatively affectedby contaminated industrial land
Family and intimate partner violence fueled by economicdecline and diminishing opportunities.1) How are you affected eitherpositively or negatively by issues of health equity?
2) How are health inequities different from health disparities?
3) What mechanisms are in place to ensure the decision-makingprocess considers the long-term interests of diverse populations?
