In my opinion, medical care/ health services is the most impactful social determinant. Access to health care impacts one’s overall physical, social, and mental health status and quality of life and this barrier of not having access to health services has been a leading issue in the healthcare industry. Barriers to health services include high cost of care, inadequate or no insurance coverage, lack of availability and lack of culturally competent care, etc. These barriers to accessing health services lead to unmet health needs, delays in receiving proper care, inability to get preventive services, financial burdens, and preventable hospitalizations. According to the CDC, about 1 in 10 people in the United States dont have health insurance, and people without insurance are less likely to have primary care and they may not be able to afford the health care services and medications they need. In addition, people dont get recommended health care services because they dont have primary care and if they do, sometimes they cant afford the services because of the lack of insurance, the lack of transportation, and the ability to get to health care providers who offer them. Primary care has been demonstrated to be associated with enhanced access to healthcare services, better health outcomes, and a decrease in hospitalization and use of emergency department visits in both developed and developing countries. Primary care can also counteract the negative impact of poor economic conditions on health. In addition, research has indicated that countries and regions more oriented to primary care have lower healthcare costs but better health outcomes (Shi, 2012). Furthermore, better primary care is correlated with more equitable distribution of health within a population and can mitigate the adverse effects of income inequality, which is especially important in the United States where racial and ethnic minorities face greater difficulties accessing regular primary care. One of the main objectives for healthy people 2020 was to get more people access to health services. The access to health services topic area encompasses 3 components; coverage, services, and timeliness, and all these components can be drastically improved upon to give people more access to health care services. In addition to primary care, getting more people access to health insurance is also very critical to give them access to proper health care. Many people dont want to get help for their health and well-being because of the high cost of care and being uninsured, so health insurances open up the gate for people to ask for help and to actually get the services. Increasing the use of health communication and health information technologies is a very good way to help people with services and the timeliness of treatments. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare industry heavily relied on telehealth to give people the care they need, and keeping the usage of telehealth can increase the amount of care that people are getting from their providers. It also helps people save time and cost which will motivate more people to ask for the care they need. In conclusion, primary care providers, health insurance, and increasing the use of EHR and telehealth can give people more access to healthcare services.
