For the final assignment, I want you to compose an essay—which you will deliver in the form
of a post—but please treat this the same as you would a formal college essay. There is no
manual form prescribed because of the limitations of posting on an online forum like Canvas,
but it does help your grade if you consider this to be every bit as “formal” as a class essay.
For out topic, I would like you to consider US History as a whole, that is as the sum-total in a
sense of what we have been trying to examine all semester—the scope and sweep of US
History. Now, there is no ‘one’ moment in US history that is more important than another,
but there are many times when we see a seminal event that drew from the past as well as
affected the future trend of our history as a nation.
I want you to pick one moment/event/era in US history as we have studied it this semester—
your choice, no restrictions! Then I want you to explain why you chose your particular
event/era/moment as a seminal one. Do not write a mere recapitulation of textbook
material—we all know that by now! Instead, you may use short references to class material
to illustrate your opinions and ideas (the bulk of this essay) on the hows and whys of your
choice. Give this some depth; after all it is worth more than twice what the other posts so far
have been.
Avoid general statements (unless supported by your examples/evidence) and do try to give
this post/essay some depth of thought. The bulk of this material will be your own thoughts
(again supported by the historical material)—so it really is an historical analysis of your
“moment” in history.
Especially think about the US in 2021—what connections can you make between your era and
today? It can be similar or dissimilar—but you need to explain it in the post. Don’t just say
something and leave it there. Fully explain your ideas in separate paragraphs!
And remember those grammatical precepts of good writing, especially in a college level class.
This is not a sidewalk conversation between two people. It is an historical rendering of your
views on the prompt. So read thoroughly!
