Imagine that you have been given a glimpse of a future in which the world seems to you to be a much more just place. Envision a specific time and place for this future and then describe to your reader how life is better in that future than in our world now. Feel free to be creative! Your vision should focus on justice as a social outcome. You are not trying to imagine a world in which only you personally (or your descendants) live better, but rather a world in which many, many people (maybe everyone?) would live better. This future world need not be perfect; however, it should improve upon our current world in multiple ways that seem necessary or interesting to you. Include multiple changes that you would wish for. Describe those changes; be specific and detailed. But be sure to explain how these changes make the world more just! After you have described this future world, explain to your reader why this version of the future appeals to you. In what ways does it reflect your personal values? What does this vision of the future tell us about who you are as a person?
A second warning: Remember, your vision must be grounded in justice. You should not be trying to imagine a future that’s really cool, but rather a future that is more fair, equitable, humane, and/or just. For example: flying cars would be really cool! But how would flying cars contribute to a more just world? You will need to explain that to your reader.
Helpful Clarifications.
You should describe a vision of a future world. In doing so,
- Do NOT discuss in detail how our current world is messed up. You can mention this occasionally in passing, but you do not need to write multiple sentences to convince your reader that a problem exists in our own time.
- You do NOT have to explain the process for how that better future world came to be! That means you don’t need to give a history of laws, innovations, etc. that led to the better future. You just need to describe it as if it already exists. (This is good, because it can be hard to imagine how to get to a better world.)
