Answer 1 of the 3 essay questions below:

  1. In this course, we have seen that scholars did research with different non-human animals, such as monkeys or elephants. In your opinion, have animal studies been helpful in understanding certain aspects of human nature? To develop your answer, use materials from the units on attachment and empathy.

  1. Have the social psychological studies covered in this course provided valuable insights about helping others in emergency situations? Your answer should discuss major studies covered in the altruism unit, especially the two 1968 articles by Latane and Darley, and it should consider the 2007 paper by Manning, Levine, and Collins about research on the social psychology of helping.

  1. In the third part of our course entitled “Living Well,” we saw that scholars have used different methods for studying complex topics such as happiness and resilience. In your view, which methods of study have been most useful for illuminating these two topics – happiness and resilience? In your answer, you need to describe specific research methods used in scholarly studies on these topics, and you need to assess the value of those methods.

Additional Instructions

Dont include a separate title page. Upload the file as a word document.

Provide the following information at the beginning: your name, your student number, the name of your TA, your tutorial section, and a title for your essay (these do not count for the total word count), and the total word count for your essay.

The paper should be double-spaced. Use 12-point font (Calibri or Times New Roman). Indent the beginning of each paragraph.

Number of paragraphs: Your essay should be about 6 to 8 paragraphs.

Paragraphs vary in length. However, for this assignment no paragraph should be shorter than 3 sentences or longer than 7 sentences.

Use paragraphs with topic sentences, precise language, clear phrasing, and good connections that help the reader to follow your analysis.

Essay structure

Your first paragraph should introduce your topic and state your main claims.

The following paragraphs should develop your claims, providing evidence for them. Whenever possible, use good examples to illustrate your main points.

The final paragraph should be a conclusion, where you remind the reader what you have accomplished in this essay and how you did that.

Content

To write your essay answers, use the materials from our class lectures, tutorials, readings, and videos.  You can consult other sources, but this is not required and not needed to do well.  Moreover, the specific ideas and evidence in your essay should come only from the course materials and your analysis of those materials.

Citing materials

Do not provide full references or a bibliography.  However, you need to mention the source of information you are using.  You can do this easily in many ways. For example, you can say: According to author so and so, . . . .  ;  So and so claimed . . . . ;  Research on . . .  showed . . .  (Milgram 1974).

Quotations:

If you are quoting directly from a source, then you need to put the quoted passage in quotation marks and indicate the source. For example: Mamie Clark said . . . (Clark, quoted in Rutherford, page x). For a video/film, you can say: Milgram video (for example). No need to cite the minute of the quotation.

About asking your TA

You cannot ask your TA to review your test.

If you have any questions about the test, you can ask them during your tutorials.

You can also ask your TA a question for clarification about the test BEFORE December 6, by 5pm.
