This week, you will look at human sexuality from a historical perspective. What were the beliefs and values regarding sexuality in the past? Has the human race always struggled with maintaining the healthy view of human sexuality that God intended? You will want to answer these questions as you research and prepare your Apply Assignment this week.
Throughout history, different cultures have defined and managed sexuality through different standards, ceremonies and behaviors. Cultures tend to change and/or adapt their sexual standards, morals and behavior with each advancement in industry or technology. These changes have created a skewed view of sexuality one that does not align with Gods unchanging design for our individual lives and relationships.
In your research this week, you will find several human sexuality themes in which opinions and standards have morphed throughout history: gender roles, cultural influence, social issues (premarital sex, homosexuality, prostitution, contraception, pornography, etc), ethical considerations (IVF, test tube babies, contraception), etc. We will continue to discuss these themes throughout the course as we review additional perspectives related to human sexuality.
This week, start your research by looking at a multi-cultural, historical perspective of human sexuality. Review the Power Point presentation at your own pace. Be sure to research additional information to topics found within the presentation as you have questions.
Next, spend some time researching human sexuality in Western culture from the historical perspective. Much of discussion regarding human sexuality in Western culture centers on changes in beliefs and views regarding women. As women were given additional rights or assumed additional roles throughout history, the attitudes and sentiments regarding womens role in sexuality also changed.
This interactive website ( ) will provide a good overview of information regarding the history of human sexuality in Western culture. Click through all of the time period links listed at the top (Pre-20th Century, Early to Mid 20th Century, and Mid to Late 20th Century) and review the interactive information. Be sure to stop and view the short video clips included within the website.
Your written assignment will focus on one current issue or topic regarding human sexuality. Choose a current human sexuality issue or topic and discuss this issue or topic from a historical perspective. Examples of issues or topics might include contraception, gender roles, views on marriage, gender or sexual identity issues, etc. You may want to include your insight from the resources you reviewed above as well.
You will also need to research additional, cross-cultural information to add to the historical perspective you have already encountered this week. You will want to research both the history of Western cultures views on the human sexuality issue or topic you choose as well as the historical views on the issue from the perspective of another culture or people group.
Keep in mind as you research that you will find a wealth of information that does not align with the Truth defined by God or Gods Word. You will need to be diligent in sifting through the information you find and seeking Gods wisdom and discernment to determine what is true according to Gods Word.
Be sure to include information regarding how the historical perspective of human sexuality affects our current cultures beliefs and values on the topic or issue you choose. What specific events in history have helped to shape current values and practices regarding the human sexuality topic or issue?
