Hydrofracking Paper and Mock Town Hall Meeting: You will be assigned to a stakeholder group
and you (as an individual not as a group) will write a 2-3 page letter using fact based evidence to the
Governor of NY who is faced with a policy decision on whether to allow natural gas hydrofracking in
NY State. On the one hand, hydro fracturing will bring jobs to the poorer regions of southern NY but
the citizenry will suffer from the potential environmental degradation, possible exposures and
increased truck traffic that comes with the industry. You will state your stakeholder role and provide
three major points to back up your desired policy position. Each of your three points must be cited
with at least one reputable source. Your final paragraph will be your policy recommendation to the
Governor.
For the Hydrofracking paper and Mock Town Hall Meeting, here are the randomly assigned stakeholder groups:
Constellation Energy Company (gas company with hydrofracking skills) – Taylor, Alecia, Amalia
Environmental NGO – Randy, Kialei, Meghan, Clara, Katherine
New York Citizens (in favor of hydrofracking) – Leticia, Emily, Sandra, Eunice
Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) – Shari, Brittany, Diana
Before Session 2 class (January 18, 2022), please submit your 2-3 page letter on the 2U platform, directed to the Governor of New York, based on the perspective of your assigned stakeholder. Please make sure to follow the instructions on the assignment write-up! In Session 2 class, each stakeholder group will meet in break-out groups to discuss your strategy (~20 minutes), and then all stakeholders will present their main talking points in a Mock Town Hall Meeting!
