Take any period in Modern American History after 1865 and focus on one event like World War II or the decision to drop  the Atomic bomb or the Vietnam War or broader time periods like the Progressive Era or the New Deal era or the Reconstruction Era. Find two SCHOLARLY ARTICLES that have different perspectives or arguments about this event. Explain why the two perspectives or arguments are different. You should analyze the sources of both works.            You should also consider the publication date of each article.

You can find scholarly articles on JSTOR and America: History & Life in the Database Finder on the Ramapo library website. A scholarly article in history is an article that is written by a historian who most often has a Ph.D. in History or a related field and is published in a scholarly journal like the Journal of American History of the American Historical Review. These articles are reliable because the journals put them through peer review. This means that other academic historians read the article and evaluate the arguments, interpretations, and claims and make sure the author has used reliable primary sources and understands the secondary literature on the subject.

The opening paragraph should clearly articulate the arguments/perspectives of the authors.

The body of the essay should use examples from the articles to illustrate how the authors support their arguments.

The last two or three paragraphs should be used to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the authors arguments.

You can use parenthetical references and you should have a works cited page with each article listed in Chicago Manual of Style or Turabian format.
