According to our resources this week, Florence Nightingale promoted the theory that the first requirement in a hospital is to do no harm (Regis, 2019). One patient care problem that I see often is Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPIs). These are pressure injuries that patients do not come into the hospital with, but later develop as a result of spending too long laying in the same position in the hospital bed. At my hospital, much thought and work has gone into decreasing the occurrences of HAPIs, and Nightingale’s theory of environment can be applied to this.
Florence Nightingale was one of the first nurses to document the impact of the built environment on patients, and she understood that these environmental aspects significantly contributed to health outcomes. Nightingale’s theory can be applied to the concept of environment when preventing HAPI’s in that the surface patient’s lay on and how often they are turned directly impacts their skin and risks of pressure injuries. Pressure injuries are major health, safety and quality of care issues for patients and healthcare organizations (Latimer, S. Chapoyer, W. Thalib, L. Mclnnes, E. Bucknall, T. Gillespie, B, 2019) and therefore it is important to know how to prevent them. One-way Nightingale’s theory of do no harm can be applied to the concept of this environment is by making sure patients are being turned every 2 hours, and that nurses are rotating their positions. Changing the positions of patients who are unable to do so themselves is the responsibility of nursing staff, and therefore an environmental cause. The second way is by reducing linens, pads and briefs used in the hospital setting. Excess padding can lead to more pressure sores, therefore this another environmental cause.
We can also use Nightingale’s theory to address the major environmental problem described in the trailer, “An Inconvenient Truth.” This video describes that the 10 hottest years ever measured have all occurred in the past 14 years, and that we are causing global warning. This is not a political issue, but a moral issue (An Inconvenient Truth Trailer, 2006). Nightingale’s theory is to do no harm, and this video is portraying that society is harming this world. To address this major environmental problem, Nightingale’s theory would suggest that we focus on environmental management by driving more fuel-efficient cars, riding public transport to decrease gas, and decreasing the amount of food that is wasted each day. These ideas would all help improve global warning, thus leading to cooler temperatures.

Florence Nightingale is one of the most well-known and trusted figures in the world of nursing. Her theories will be used in education for nurses for years to come. She educated nurses to learn about the patient environment and be more observative to medical knowledge (McEwen & Willis, 2014).
One patient care problem that comes to mind for me is wound infection in c-section patients. There are many steps and precautions that need to be taken to keep wound infections from occurring after surgery. This concept can apply to Nightingale’s theory, because you must have cleanliness and pure water (Alligood, 2018). Cleanliness is an important concept because it necessary for wound healing. Nightingale stresses the importance of cleanliness and states that nurses must work hard to preserve it (Pirani, 2016). Cleanliness is required in order to keep infection from occurring. Another important part of wound healing is pure water (Alligood, 2017). Sterile technique and hand washing allow for better wound healing and promote healing (Alligood, 2018). Nightingale states that nature alone can heal a patient (Pirani, 2016).
After watching the trailer for “An Inconvenient Truth”, there are many similarities to Nightingale’s theory. The Earth’s temperature is rising, and the world that we live in is becoming polluted. Her first environmental theory is pure air and water (Alligood, 2018). This can be used to cure the environmental problem, because clean air can help stop pollution. The pollution will then help with global warming. If we make sure that there is clean water, we will have a better outcome. Many countries struggle to have clean water for drinking and hygiene. If we can find ways to have clean water, the environment will be better. There are many different theories on global warming, but her theory on the environment is spot on.
