You will compose a relationship story in which challenges in developing intercultural relationships are explored.
This is a creative assignment. I am asking you to write and develop a story of your creation. A good story has the familiar elements: plot, characters, scene/context, action; beginning, middle, end; title!
The story you develop is in connection with Chapter 10 about intercultural intimate relationships. Intimate relationships can include deep friendships, romantic relationships, and close family relationships. Perhaps your story will even combine these types of relationships.
You will need to decide the characters for your story as well as the intercultural communication challenge(s) they will face.
Notice that I am not offering a page range for this assignment. When it comes to writing a story, it takes as long as it takes. (If I had to guess, I would say this one would be 5 pages and up.)
Narrative is a perspective on communication itself–that we are storytelling and storyliving beings. (If you would like to know more about this, I like The Storytelling Animal because it draws on multiple perspectives to explore narrative in our lives.) Story or narrative is a familiar format in which we share our lives and through which we receive communication from others. “True” stories are still an interpretation while “fictional” stories are often based in our real-life experiences. So yes–feel free to write a relationship story based on something you or people close to you have experienced.
