I would like for you to choose a manager/leader to interview. It can be your boss, a parent, a friend, or anyone you know to be a manager/leader. The main point of this interview is to really get into the nature of what they do as a manager. I am also interested to see why they are successful and what they think it takes to really succeed as a manager and to push their organization to truly succeed. Be sure you tell who they are, who they work for, who/what in general they lead/manage, years experience, other major roles they have served in, and anything else you can think of to help me understand the manager’s position. You can ask them any questions you like, but let me request that you get into these types of questions.
1. What are the main things you do as a manager in terms of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling?
2. How is being a manager different from what you did when you weren’t a manager?
3. What are the most difficult aspects or most challenging parts of your job as a manager? What are the parts that you enjoy the most?
4. What are the most important skills and abilities that managers have to possess to be successful?
5. Give us some of the most important things you have learned over the years about being a great manager/leader and building a very positive and successful organization/department.
6. I am especially interested in their dealings with other people in the organization. Do they have major conflicts? What do they look for in the people they hire? etc.
Again, you can use your discretion in the interview questions but really try to get into the details of the tasks, skills, challenges, joys, required competence, etc. of the management job.
