Requirements for PMHNP Certification
In order to be eligible for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certification (PMHNP-BC) an individual must first be a licensed Registered Nurse. Additionally, that individual needs to have a masters degree from a PHHNP program that is accredited by the CCNE, ACEN or CNEA. (Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation, respectively.)
For the PMHNP degree program to be accredited by any of the above-named accreditation bodies it must include the following: a minimum of 500 clinical hours with training in at least two different psychotherapeutic treatment modalities, an advanced physiology/ pathophysiology across the lifespan course, an advanced pharmacology course and an advanced health assessment course. It is also required to have instruction in disease management, differential diagnosis, the use of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments and health promotion/ maintenance.
Once you are ready to take the certification examination you must provide several documents to the ANCC. They are: full transcripts from the PMHNP program, a Validation of Education Form (available online), a GAP Analysis form (for students that did not complete all courses at one institution) and a final, official transcript. The fees for certification testing vary and range between $220 and $395 dollars.
The Value of Certification
Certification as a PMHNP is an indication that the licensed NP cares deeply about their role as a mental health provider and has taken additional steps to be educated and prepared to provide exceptional mental health care. The PMHNP is not only working to advance their career and be a success in their field, but they are also looking to be a contributor to the mental health environment in which they work. It is expected that they are working as more than a health care provider, but also as a researcher and voice for the implementation of the newest evidence-based care techniques available.
Career Goals and Certification
For me, as a PMHNP student, certification is a mark of professional success, one that indicates that I am not only interested in advancing within the world of nursing but also that I care enough about the treatment I provide to receive further education and training that I know will help my patient/ clients. This certification sets me apart from other PMHNPs and indicates that I value the education and science of mental healthcare and denotes me as an asset to employers.
Nursing Theory
Application of nursing theory allows me to implement science and research into everyday practice, both as a provider, as a team member and a manager. The different theories are applicable to every aspect of nursing and provide a construct for understanding how nursing functions, from a grand scale to very complex specialized practices (abstract vs concrete). These theories, especially the concrete ones, are based on science and research and knowledge of this information can and will inform my practice. As new knowledge is gained, and these concrete theories change and improve they will form the basis of practice for the next generation of nurses.

Certified advanced practice nurses obtain salary increments since they demonstrate a high standard of practice and commitment to the profession (HU-Nursing, 2021). Next, certified nurses are considered by the departmental board for leadership and managerial posts (HU-Nursing, 2021). Lastly, certified nurses are most likely to have promotions at their workplaces.
How can application of nursing theory benefit you personally and empower/advance the nursing profession as a whole?
Primarily, nursing theories create a holistic understanding of the nursing profession. From an individual perspective, nursing theories uphold the significance of exhibiting a human approach in care settings. For instance, most nursing theories emphasize the significance of patient-centered treatment interventions to promote optimal outcomes. Next, the phenomena act as the scope of nursing practice since they assist advanced obtain rationale for making critical decisions (HU-Nursing, 2021). For instance, physicians learn to diagnose their assessed findings to determine an appropriate treatment patient care plan.
